Hi Chris

I thought you'd like to know that the old dog is now doing new tricks.
I plugged in the repaired time capsule and after a simple reset in the Airport Utility it was ready to go.
I connected it to each Mac in turn using an ethernet cable and the new 2TB hard-disk eagerly wolfed down all the back up data I could throw at it.
Splendid work, you provided a fantastic service with a quick turn around at a reasonable cost (less than half that of a new one), plus hand delivery to boot.
10 out of 10, can't say more than that.

Dear Chris

Your father called me this afternoon to arrange delivery of the Time Capsule. It was very generous but I thought it a little unfair to put him to that trouble and offered to pick the unit up this afternoon. Your Dad invited me in whilst he fetched the neatly wrapped package from another room. We chatted a while and he explained how poorly with dementia your mother had become. It’s such a shame as he is such a lively and bright person and said how much he missed her. We then went on to talk about how uncommon the Fackrell name was and he shared a little genealogy information with me!!

I just visited your website again and read some of your blogs. I was expecting the blogs to describe your experiences with Time Capsules so was quite taken by your account of your Mums demise as the words reflected what your father had told me earlier in the day. Your blog is an interesting reflection of your busy life, all tied together with the family ups, downs and challenges and I found the ongoing story, read backwards in time, quite fascinating!!! Great stuff, you could compile a blog book of it!!

I am delighted to say that the TC is working magnificently and as expected the fan is whirring away, fairly quietly, continuously.
Just one question has surfaced, how long would you expect the fan to run without failure?
Have you had any breakdowns?

Thanks very much for your kind comments and dipping into my blog waffle.  I must add some more.

I asked Delta, the manufacturers of the fan, just what lifetime the small ball-bearings would have...   I'm still waiting for a reply.  The fan is lightly loaded (with a half-speed operation) and runs cool, so the 'expected' lifetime should be in excess of 10 years continuous running.  I have had no problems at all in 3 years.  I have seen no failures whatsoever of anything to do with anything I have altered on the TCs.

Any problems with it at all...   come back to me and I will help.

Hi Chris,

I finally had the time to rebuild my Time Capsule last night. Everything fitted back together well.
Out of interest did it originally have the space and pinouts for the fan that you installed?

Anyway having put it together there was a slight problem insomuch as the disk was not recognised initially and to get around this I did another erase, but this time zeroed out the partition. This morning that had completed and I am presently backing up my MacBook Pro laptop. So I hope that I am not being premature in suggesting that it is now working.

Interestingly enough I swapped out the Time Capsule while I was repairing it, for an original Airport Extreme Base Station which just has the 2.4GH Radio. This seemed to be much less powerful than the Time Capsule running on its 2.4GH frequency. Same physical placement, but the signal strength is definitely not so good, and our iPhones and iPads were dropping out. Something I will need to consider as I shall probably be giving my MacBook Pro and the Time Capsule to my other half as she is just about to start her own business venture and will need reliable computing, and backups.

Hopefully I can now start looking to get started on my thermometer network to remotely monitor the house when we are away and take appropriate action if the temperature falls below defined thresholds.

Just thought I'd keep you posted and let you know that all's well in TC Land right now!

Your colleague did indeed very kindly get straight to me and after a few exchanges today, and with me not really knowing what I was at (apart from becoming almost incandescent with frustration - with myself!), suddenly, somehow, things began to go right and it backed up - in fact it's doing its next backup now. The TC runs beautifully smoothly and quietly too.

What else can I say, but a huge thank you for getting the machine fixed, and for advising - and putting me in touch with 'Apple Allen', who does seem a real whizz - how to get up and running again. It's a bigger relief to me than you probably imagine!

Just picked up Time Capsule from sorting office - it is now installed and doing its first backup of my mac pro and my wife's macbook - that will take some time as it will be a full back-up. I will put off installing the 1Tb disk in the mac pro until both backups are complete.

The job looks extremely professional - you deserve a medal for doing what Apple should have done in the first place!

Really sorry it's taken me ages to get back to you - I only managed to get round to putting the TC all back together yesterday. Suffice to say that it's working beautifully and I must say you've done a superb job of modifying it.  It genuinely looks like how it should have come out from Apple originally.

I finally sent you an email to thank you so much for the work you have done.
The repaired PSU had arrived quickly and I was immediatly impressed by the quality of the repair (factory style).
And of course it works directly! (I now have to put back the hard drive inside the TC to make it "live" again).
 
I have to admit I was a bit concerned to send my dead PSU from France to UK (can a french guy "trust" a uk guy ;-) )
Anyway I am more than delighted to have fully trusted you, and I am now recommanded your work to french apple guy who own a TC.

Hi Chris,
The turbocharged Time Capsule (no 372) arrived in the post this morning, well packed and in good condition. The upgrades look very neat. I have put it in a new (better ventilated) position and started the first of the new backups. Five will take a while. Although you have set the fan to run on it doesn’t seem to make any more noise than before even in a more exposed position. All in all a very good job so thank you for all your work, it is really appreciated. It is not very often that something comes back from a repair job actually better than it started. I cannot think why Apple doesn’t incorporate these improvements themselves.

TC arrived yesterday really well packed and wrapped, having arrived as promised.
I’ve set it up tonight and it’s all working really well. The fan will no doubt help avoid the capacitor burnout!
The extra height on the TC with the new ‘legs’ really helps too.
Grateful to have the notes / instructions that came with the TC for maintenance.
The work has been done to a high standard without any visible markings and the improvements blend in with the TC too.
Great to have a 2TB drive in there, plus the new capacitor / fan system for cheaper than a new TC.
Overall, I have really appreciated the work and the good humour with which it was all done!

Just got the TC today.
What can I say?
What an amazing piece of work!
My delight started with the care that you had with the packaging.
After that I put the parts together (everything was very easy) and then I thought that I needed to use the hand dryer again to warm up the glue-on rubber base and be able to screw it to the TC.
But when I pressed the base, to my surprise, you just created small holes for the screws!
Man you rock!
Very professional!
Now I just want to buy a bigger disk.
The 500GB ones are not enough anymore for me.
Is there any disk that you recommend? Does it support a 4TB disk or shall I stick to 3TB?

What can I say?

Here's the list:

Point 1 - Your website was clear and precise and grabbed me as being set up by a personable guy who not only knew what he was talking about but was pleased to share his "secrets" and read very well and was attractive in that it said "here's a guy I can trust my precious kit and data with and he won't rip me off or lose it or anything else that you hear about these days.

Point 2 - Comm's from you throughout has been excellent and reassuring. You said (on your site) that you don't do this full time so I didn't expect an instant response. You were quick to come back on initial queries and right through the process.

Point 3 - Your prices were clear and reasonable from the start.

Point 4 - The service you offer is seemingly unique. In the UK anyway?

point 5 - after going through the initial "leap of faith", assured in my own mind by all the above, nothing contradicted this at any point in the process with your updates and very quick look at what was wrong, confirmation back and asking me to press the "green light" on the repair.

Many thanks for fixing the TimeCapsule.  
All seems to be working well now and I have managed to reconnect my old TimeMachine backup, albeit that required a bit of a workaround even though I was only reconnecting the original drive.

The quality of your workmanship is excellent and the speed with which you turned it around impressed me greatly.

You don't fix blown-out iMacs too, do you?!  (Just joking - mine is a write-off - main board failure.  Another of those 'Apple knew about it but couldn't be bothered to tell anyone' stories.

Obviously, there is a constant sound from the fan, now, as I expected.  But that is a small penalty for having the device working properly and more likely to last.  Obviously, it was poorly designed without a proper thermostatic control.  I guess the power consumption of the fan will be low, so I'll just leave the drive where it won't bother anyone.  Very good to have it back, working.

the TC parts were waiting for me when I returned from work. Great packaging and very fine work.
The new fan port and grill is very neatly done.
I shared some photos with a few Apple loving friends and they were also very impressed.

I reassembled my TC and it works fantastically.
I am now using it connected in "roaming network" configuration with my new, stand-in Extreme Base Station which means I have super strength wi-fi all over the house.
I can now also eBay a couple of old 500Gb USB drives.

So overall I am extremely pleased with my reborn TC and I would like to thank you very much for your services.

Sorry for the delay.  Things have been very busy.

I hooked up the TC to my cable modem and power,  ran the airport
utility (its been a while) and was able to restore my old profile just
fine!

You did an excellent job!  And I am looking forward to many more years
of service from the ol' TC.

I have not yet purchased a "caddy" for the old drive, but will
probably do so over the weekend.

And I am waiting for the initial backup to take place in the wee hours

The TC arrived back, safe and sound, last week and of course it duly sprang into life when I plugged it in.
I must say I was a little concerned about how noisy it would be with the fan running continuously.
In the past, when the fan was running the whole unit sometimes vibrated up and down on the shelf it sits on, and the shelf would then act as a sounding board!
But anyway, it has been running the whole weekend now - and very quietly. I think the 4 feet you attached to give it some airflow underneath also help to dampen the vibrations.

All in all a very neat and professional looking job. Many thanks for your work.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone else (assuming I knew anyone else who has a TC, which unfortunately I don't. :)

I want to sincerely thank you for putting together the time capsule repair document. My TC died a month ago and I went through the usual rigamarole at an apple store and on the phone with tech support to no avail. I found your DIY via LaPastenague and was a bit apprehensive to try the mods myself, as I have no soldering experience. I ordered the parts and gave it a go. Lo and behold it worked, totally due to the excellent detail of your photos and descriptions. I also modified the fan similar to your suggestions, but using a 47 ohm 1/2 watt resistor. My revived and modified TC is not nearly as pretty as yours look, but it's doing the job.

TC arrived back safely and has been returned to working state. It's great to have an automatic working backup again.
So glad I decide to send it off to yourself for a full repair as there is no way I could get close to skill level.

Just a note to pass on my sincere thanks for fixing my TC power supply so quickly and by return.  It safely arrived on Saturday in perfect condition as a result of your packing.
Other than your small writing (job identification information) on one of the labels, it looks exactly the same as when I took it out and you could not tell it had been repaired!  It was a nice touch to include the old capacitors that you can see were removed accurately and skilfully.
Needless to say, but I plugged the power supply back in and hey-presto, all working again.
I made a bit of hash getting the rubber of the base of my TC, but hey-ho, a few more holes in the bottom for ventilation I guess…

An update for you and I am happy for you to add to for website as feedback.

The repaired and updated Time Capsule arrived as promised, packaged with the damaged parts, the removed old hard drive that you replaced and a document with handy tips on how to keep the TC working well into the foreseeable future.  On opening the box and unpacking the unit, the modifications looked very elegant and looked as though they were part of the original design.  Considering how well Apple consider the overall aesthetic of their products  - this is praise indeed.  Some people on your site mentioned that the new fan is a little noisy.  I have my Time Capsule in my lounge and there is a low level hum that is only just perceptible and you cannot hear if you have music/TV on.  For me it is no problem at all.

When I connected up the Time Capsule to my MacBook, it was recognised and I was able to get the first back up sorted overnight.  The regular backups now happen as they did before the unit died.  I have also managed to add all my music to the external drive and once again I have music that I can play through my wireless music system.  

Thank you so much  - I have finally managed to get some piece of mind that I have my computer files backed up and have easier access to my music again.  I would definitely recommend your service to anyone that has a dead Time Capsule that Apple will not help fix/replace and wants to either get it repaired or updated with a larger hard drive.  Thanks again.

Now: I know that you've taken the whole thing apart -- from your status updates and, of course, the bigger disk -- but you've done a great job making it look as good as new.
If I listen specifically for the fan I can hear it spinning away, but otherwise the sound is no louder than anything else on my shelf.

Just wanted to get to you with something to put on your website...

"After incurring the problem that most viewers of this site would be aware of (after all that's why you're here surely?), I decided to do something I have never done before - send something to someone over the internet, with only a handful of emails to Chris as a guide to his character.

As you can imagine with this, sending a hard drive full of data, coupled with the time capsule, it wasn't a straightforward choice and I understood the element of risk that has to be associated with all internet based transactions, although I am more than pleased to say that I should never have been worried.

From my prior emails with Chris, I already knew that he was humorous, efficient, knowledgable and most importantly - helpful. This reputation was further enhanced when I discovered that after I sent my TC to Chris, he diagnosed this (unbelievably quickly) and responded to tell me that it was in fact a different issue than his fix would NOT resolve. He did however present a solution to me. One which I took, despite the risks outlined by Chris, as I didn't think there was anything to lose.

Once Chris returned my TC after managing to breathe life into it again, through his experimental, yet successful method, he did not simply leave it at that, he was more concerned that I test it thoroughly and that I would update him on how I progressed with the time capsule. Again - more than you would expect from most businesses, let alone from somebody who manages this in his spare time.

The one thing to take from this, as cheesy as it sounds, is that Chris has restored some of the faith that I have in the internet and people, as being a place to gain knowledge and interact with others - not a place where we must take caution on every corner as we do currently; and also that there are people still out there who do this to help. It's easy to forget what the world used to be like before the internet took over. Not only that the service I received from Chris was truly above and beyond, and it was all in his own time. I would not only recommend this fix to anyone who thinks their TC has died, but to anyone who wishes to prolong its life.

I recieved the PSU today and installed it right away when I got home.  The TC started up where it left before it broke!   YES!!

I am so happy that this turned out so well and I am truly amazed how you could fix it so elegantly. You have been very professional about it all.

hello chris - the TC has landed.

brilliant job and very pleasurable packaging! - thank you.

i attached the power lead and up came my "time capsule old" a quick firmware update to 7.6.1 and we are up and running.  
i turned on time machine on the other imac, selected ‘david’s 2TB disc’ and backing up as i write (maybe should have used an ethernet connection) - i hope i can live with the fan noise!

It certainly seems to be running cooler than before and the fan, whilst just about audibly noticeable (the TC sits next to my TV to supply it with a network connection), is not intrusive even in a quiet room.

Posty tried to deliver yesterday, but he waited till we were out! A trip to the post office today though has returned our TC  to it's home.
Unwrapped it ( very nicely packed BTW), plugged it in, joined to our new wireless network and it is currently backing up. Rather nicely it has just carried on from where it last backed up.
Great work, thanks for the caps - can see at least two of them are bulging.

I am the technical manager for an electronics sub contractor
( google me if you want to find out which) so I know just how this sort of work should be done. Was tempted just to do it myself, but the pics on your site of the fan mod impressed me enough to send the thing to you.

I just successfully completed a time capsule repair for my 500gb version.  I was able to repair the power supply and update the fan and bottom plate according to your directions with few problems.  OK, buying 33Kohm resistors instead of 33ohm resistors gave me a moment of panic, but even stupidity was no match for your thorough and complete directions.  Thank you so much for taking the time to put these instructions together and for sharing them with the world.  I for one am truly appreciative of your efforts. 

My biggest departure from your directions had to do with modifying the aluminum plate. I didn't have a hole drill, so I just used a hand drill and enlarged a 4X4 array of holes below the fan.  This allows some airflow and negated the need for a grate.  I cut a square of rubber out of the bottom cover, although punching corresponding holes would have lead to a cleaner finish.  The final product is nowhere near as clean looking as your finished products, but it'll do for me.

TC bits arrived this morning thanks very much.
I have reassembled it and it is working well.

Very neat job, I especially like the little tags you leave to stop the screw plugs from being lost!
All I have to do now is to remember to vac it out.

BTW I have replaced the HD with a 'green' 1TB drive I had lying around while I was at it, can't remember exactly which (it's all screwed up tight again), but it's one that was recommended on various sites.  The airport utility said that the drive needed repairing, possibly as it recognised it as a new one, does 'erase' in the TC prefs do this?  
Disc utility doesn't find airport discs I believe.

Anyway many thanks for the repair, it looks great, and is working well.

Just a quick note to say thank you for the returned, fixed and upgraded Time Capsule, which worked out of the box. The fact that you were able to restore it to full (indeed, enhanced) functionality, without trashing all the original settings was a Godsend. I remember the pain I endured setting it up initially, to get it to work with a static IP address and Back To My Mac, and I was dreading having to go through all that again.

But there was no need to worry.  Having done my initial sync with both laptops, I am looking forward to a long time before having to archive stuff - clearly, 3TB is a MASSIVE amount of hard drive space!

The job you did looks fantastic, functional and first class.  Thank you for your skill, speed and sense of humour!

Hi Chris,

The Time Capsule is safely back home.  I've set it back up, we're all back on wifi...bliss and peace reign here again....and I'm currently backing up onto Time Machine.

It's a strange but wonderful sound to hear the fan working for the first time on the TC.

What I am gobsmack-ed by, (from an architecture and design background), is the level of care you've give to the detailing of the repair.  The hole that's been cut in the rubber base is like a factory finish. The covered screw heads are virtually imperceptible.  The feet are a simple and intelligent solution to the 'get air flow to the underside of the TC' problem.  So...nice work there...I imagine that it would have taken quite a bit of trial and error to get all that right....but it's important as the TC still looks good.  If you take that much care on the outside then that is, I trust, an indication of the level of care that is invested on the inside gubbinses!

So....very happy here.  Thanks for being someone who's taken the time to offer a solution to this rare but unbelievable apple design bodge job.

It arrived on Tuesday - I dropped it back into place, fastened everything back together, and it is working fine. 
Those old black capacitors that you returned did look a bit worse for wear - I wonder if they all blew at once, or whether it was limping along for a while as they went down one by one?

This is to confirm that the TC you have worked on so hard has now been delivered safely and I have set it up successfully. The first Time Machine backup to the new 2TB disc is running as I write this.
I must record that I am delighted with your workmanship on the new fan arrangement – it’s absolutely beautiful! ... And the unit is only slightly warm to the touch – I shall have to find another surface on which to fry eggs ;-)
I’ve made a note of your recommendations about hoovering the mesh in front of the fan; set an automatic reminder to do it once a month (my physical desk top gets a dusting at about the same frequency).

Without damaging anything, he removed only the bits that were needed for me to repair and modify, which were much more lightweight to send to the UK and back, having had work done. It is truly a marvel of engineering, shame the Apple bods are still making them incorrectly, for whatever reason.
Our TC looks wonderful with new legs, you would never know it has undergone major surgery.

When it packed up and i first looked on the Apple website, I couldn't believe that our serial was just out of range and
not entitled to an apple refurb.. thank the lord we found your site as it makes clear that we would be better off sending to you

The Apple TC 2Tb arrived at 8:15am this morning thank you Chris.  

The considered packaging was like getting a brand new one from Apple.  Fired up, green light and restored settings all within 5 mins.  Now backing up 411Gb which will of course take a while.  

Beautifully neat job too, looks like it was made that way - (as indeed it should have been). So thank you very much again Chris for getting me so quickly out of this problem. Highly recommendable service in all respects from first contact through the work in progress, fix and test, and finally dispatch back to owner, with confidence inspiring email updates throughout, all in just four days from dispatch to return.

Exceptional value especially if, as I did, you take the 1 > 2Tb drive upgrade as well, leaving you feeling you really do now have a cooler, more reliable and much improved capacity Time Capsule, somewhat future proofed having arisen from it’s untimely graveyard and probably now not likely to return there for many a year.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, a wonderful fruit based company devised a system to keep us warm as we used our computers, which also doubled as a plate warmer and hot surface to keep the rest of your curry or Chinese food warm. Although being an efficient silent heater was obviously its main purpose, with a little technical knowledge, backups of software and files could also be stored on it !
 
The people thought this invention was incredible, but rather like unpopular vegetables in the bottom of your fridge, it had a shelf life… 18 months was the average, and many thought that the device could then only be used as an expensive door stop, and sadness fell upon the land
 
As a mere peasant (albeit with high hopes), I attacked my device with an assortment of  blacksmith’s tools, and after much huffing and puffing I was able to remove the grey rubber that coated the devices bottom and in the process only ripped it into 7 pieces !  After removing the many screws, and levering off the base plate I was presented with a mess of electronics I neither understood, nor could repair, and more importantly in this state, I could no longer use it as a door stop
 
As with every tale, there should be a happy ending, and this story is no different thanks to Prince Christopher of Eutechnics, who rode into my life on his grey and white stallion (ok, website) fresh from his crusades into Scottishland, “send forth your heater, peasant” he exclaimed, and I did as I was commanded. I also gave him the bag of beans my mother had refused to plant in case the Jobs Giant came down to eat the villagers, and this encouraged the Prince to work even faster, and he returned my heater after just 2 days of fiddling
 
I said there should be a happy ending, and there should !  But sadly my heater is no more… Even after Prince Christopher’s hard work and a sprinkling of fairy dust, and even though its rubber bottom looks perfect and like it’s never been touched, and it has nice new rubber feet, and there’s a very neat and tidy hole where there always should have been…. My device now allows my Chinese food to get cold, and I am having to throw dwarves on the fire to keep warm !
 
Ending on a positive note though, Cinderella says she has now safely backed up her porn collection !
 
The End…. Or the beginning of a long and happily renewed relationship with my Time Capsule

I set up the Time Capsule over the weekend and it is humming happily in a corner, just warm to the touch.  I was a little worried about the fan being on all the time, but this is not proving to be a problem or obtrusive.  I must congratulate you on an excellent job with the modifications and alteration, it really does look as though it has just come from the factory.  All the changes you've made look as though they are from the original casting, as it were.

The TC has arrived in fine fettle and this email will have winged its way to you via the TC wireless network, while my Macbook is now at peace having brought Time Machine up to date!

The mod looks excellent and the quality is great - an observer without any previous TC/Mac knowledge would think that it was shipped from Apple like that (as perhaps it should have been)! The fan is quietly working away and I can even feel air movement from the case, its been on a couple of hours now and is running much cooler to touch.

Just a line to say that my TC is now back up and running. It connected first time and remembered its previous configuration so I can access my backups again, which is useful as I seem to have lost a few tracks out of iTunes for some bizzare reason. Currently it is backing up 35Gb of changes!
